An acroynm that is often misunderstood and it can have many meanings to different industries. What we refer to is Virtual Private Networking. Put in simple terms - extend your office to home or your home to office. Why? Well its usual for files and resources to be centred somewhere and you can be there all the time. For example company records, accounting systems maybe located at the office and you need access to them periodically from home or while you are travelling. Similarly you may have more than one office and the need to connect them to share resources is required.
Today, organisations are using VPNs (virtual private networks) to expand company resources for remote employees and distant offices. A VPN is a private network that uses the Internet to connect remote sites or users together to create a single network. Instead of using a wired connection such as a leased line, VPNs use "virtual" connections typically routed through existing Internet from one company's private network to the remote site or employee.
SMT provides VPN solutions that enable organisations to extend their business without the geographic limitations private wires present. An example of a VPN would see a remote user on a PC/laptop connected to a Broadband modem or broadband (& ISDN) enabled network. That user would require secure access to the main office where the central files server/ systems are located. Remote-access VPNs permit secure, encrypted connections between a company's private network and remote offices/ individual users.
